 Otis College Announces Charles White Art

 A $10M GIFTS FROM BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR MEILEE NEY MAKES THE SCHOLARSHIP ACCESSIBLE

 Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to announce a complete, four-year, scholarship program named in honor of influential American artist and educator, Charles White (1918-1979). Ian White, and the Charles White Archives.

 The inaugural scholarship will be awarded to an incoming first-year artist and designer from a minority group within Los Angeles County in Spring 2022 in anticipation of a Fall 2022 start. The award will then be expanded to include one Los Angeles County student and one from any other country beginning in 2023.

 White was renowned for his figurative style–which ran counter to abstract movements of the day–as well as his representations of Black life as well as his reflections on social justice issues depicted in his paintings, drawings, lithographs, and murals. White was an instructor who influenced the practice and work of many notable artists, such as Kerry James Marshall and David Hammons and Richard Wyatt Jr., Alonzo Davies, Judithe Hernandez and Kent Twitchell.

 “This scholarship program gives budding artists the chance to develop their talents in the creative field. Charles White was denied two scholarships to pursue his artistic passions as an adult solely because of his pigmentation. Being a well-known artist, White was also denied entry to view his work due to his coloration.
